Sigma Kappa CHAPTER
LOCATION: suffolk university
CHARTERED: APRIL 30TH, 2011
The history of the Sigma Kappa Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho comes out of the work of eight Northeastern University students in 1982. These women worked over 2 years to charter the first chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho in New England: Kappa Nu. This chapter was chartered on April 27th, 1984 at the Northeastern Regional Conference in Virginia Beach, Virginia, making it the flagship chapter of New England.
While established as a chapter at Northeastern University, Kappa Nu was designated as a “Metro chapter” meaning women in the metropolitan area of Boston could join the chapter, despite which university they attended. As such, Sigma Gamma Rho also attracted diverse women from Boston University, Emmanuel College, Suffolk University, Wellesley College and even Bridgewater State.
In 2008, Kappa Nu chapter was asked by our national body to split into separate chapters to better serve the Boston area. The Kappa Nu intake of Spring 2008 included four women from three different schools: Northeastern University, Suffolk University and the University of Massachusetts-Boston. Soror Alyssa Arzola, a student at Suffolk University, was part of that intake. Soror Arzola helped to pave the way for the establishment of Sigma Gamma Rho on Suffolk University’s campus.
The path to chartering a chapter would begin in 2008 but would not be met until the spring of 2011. Just like the beginning of Sigma in New England, the Sigma Kappa chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was chartered at our Northeastern Regional Conference on April 30, 2011. The five charter members of Sigma Kappa chapter are:
Caroline Lature (Spring 2010)
Sheree Daley (Spring 2010)
Devaki Perryman (Spring 2011)
Dorotie Louis-Jacques (Spring 2011)
Vanessa Afogho (Spring 2011)
This chartering makes the Sigma Kappa chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. the first and only historically African-American sorority at Suffolk University.
With history, legacy and sisterhood in town, Sigma Kappa chapter is poised to continue our motto: “Greater Service, Greater Progress”.
